Google Says Apple Did Reject Google Voice from App Store

Last month, Google, Apple, and AT&T all handed over statements to the FCC regarding the alleged rejection of Google Voice from the iTunes App Store. Apple claimed that they’d never rejected it to begin with, while Google redacted their one answer that might shed light on things. Well, now Google’s dishing the complete letter, which does in fact state that Apple rejected Google Voice from the App Store, as well as Google Latitude, which they worried would replace the core Maps app because it had features Maps didn’t. In short, it definitely seems like there’s a bad apple in this bunch. [Google Public Policy Blog via Gizmodo]

Apple Says No More Promo Codes For Apps With Unfiltered Web Content

TUAW writes that Apple is no longer providing app developers with promo codes if their app is rated for ages 17 and over. The problem is that this not only applies to the slew of adult apps that have been pouring in to the App Store in recent months, but it also includes all applications that provide unfiltered content from the web distributed by other people, which as Marco Arment points out includes Instapaper, all Tumblr and Twitter clients, RSS readers, IM clients, social networking clients, and the majority of eBook readers.

Eucalyptus E-Book Reader Now Approved, Available in App Store

This time, same as the last time, the initial, stupefying rejection of e-book reader Eucalyptus has been followed up by web outrage and now App Store acceptance. (Can we officially call these the 4 stages of App Store grief’ing now?) From developer Montgomerie’s blog (via Macworld):

Earlier today I received a phone call from an Apple representative. He was very complimentary about Eucalyptus. We talked about the confusion surrounding its App Store rejections, which I am happy to say is now fully resolved. He invited me to re-build and submit a version of Eucalyptus with no filters for immediate approval, and that full version is now available on the iPhone App Store. [$9.99 - iTunes link]

OS 3.0 Compatibility Now Required For All App Store Submissions

As of yesterday, Apple is now requiring all apps and app updates submitted to the App Store for approval to be OS 3.0-compatible. Apps in the App Store that have not yet been updated when the new OS is released will be removed from the App Store. Apple sent the announcement out in an email to registered developers yesterday. The new requirement is to ensure that all apps in the app store will be compatible with the new OS when it is released at WWDC this June. Full text after the break.

iPhone Beta 5 Odds and Ends: No More MMS, Better YouTube?

The official script may have minimized it as a maintenance release, but some users are finding out that iPhone Beta 5 contains more than bugfixes. So far: YouTube’s improved, and hacked MMS is no more.

The guys at winandmac say they’ve noticed a change in the YouTube app’s stream handling. Now, instead of defaulting to the low-res OTA version of a YouTube video when connected via 3G, the app plays the high-res version previously reserved for Wi-Fi.

Meanwhile, in our comments and over at the iPhone Blog, AT&T-bound Beta 5 users are reporting that the simple MMS stopgap hack is no longer possible.

It’s only been few hours since Beta 5 burst forth into this world, naked and screaming, so more changes are bound to bubble up to the surface—there are already rumblings that new anti-tethering measures have been implemented, but this hasn’t been confirmed (and may have more to do with new security features in iTunes 8.2 than iPhone OS). Apple Caves In: NIN’s iPhone App Approved Without Alteration

Straight from the twitter account of the man himself, the NIN iPhone app has been approved and will be available sometime later today “unchanged” from the version that Apple found objectionable.

So, it appears that Apple has caved in to the criticism, further illustrating that their approval system is all kinds of messed up. All that aside, I’m just happy it’s on it’s way. [Twitter]

iPhone 3.0: Parental Controls May Change App Store Rejection Policies?

With all of the rejections in the App Store going on as of late it’s about time we have some good news for our pal Trent Reznor - see link above - and all of the developers out there.

It seems that Apple has rejected a newspaper reading app, Newspaper(s) [iTunes Link], for containing objectionable content. This app contains newspapers from around the world and one of them has a picture of a topless woman. Apple, however, let the developer know in it’s rejection email that Parental Controls have been announced for iPhone OS 3.0 and that it “would be appropriate to resubmit your application for review once this feature is available.”

So there you have it folks. Will these new parental control features (see them in our iPhone 3.0 Walkthrough) help cut down on rejected apps or will we still see these types of rejections take place? Sound off in the comments!
