iPhone Dev Team Releases Jailbreak For 3GS [Update: Comments From The Dev Team]

The iPhone Dev Team has released a new version of RedSn0w that jailbreaks the iPhone 3GS, as well as 2G, 3G, and iPod touch 2 on OS 3.0. It runs on both Windows and Mac, and has the same instructions for each as previous versions. The problems with Icy and Cydia have allegedly been resolved, and Ultrasn0w should work on the 3GS after you jailbreak with RedSn0w. Mobile Substrate and Winterboard are also now working on the 3GS. BigBoss is hosting the files here: Windows, Mac.

State of the iPhone 3.0 Jailbreak

iPhone 2.0 Jailbreak and Unlock Pirate

The iPhone Dev-Team has posted a few words regarding Jailbreaking the 3.0 software:

Because there are so many beta releases, we couldn’t possible refine, test, and release both PwnageTool and QuickPwn for each of them. That’s why we’re waiting until the final release. You may have seen other “hijacked” versions of QuickPwn out there, but all of them are buggy, none of them work on OSX, and almost everyone who uses them reverts back to 2.2.1 (because none of the useful jailbroken apps (Qik, Cycorder, and others) work on 3.0 yet).

Now this does not mean you currently can not Jailbreak 3.0 because you can, it’s just that the Dev-Teams software is not fine-tuned for the iPhone beta software. If you do decide to Jailbreak the 3.0 beta you will run into some issues. The biggest issue, as stated above, being a lot of the applications available via Cydia will not be compatible with 3.0. It is also important to note that if you ever want to unlock your iPhone 3G, you need to avoid the 3.0 software altogether unless and until the Dev-Team provides a safe jailbreak path.

So our advice to the Jailbreakers of the world: have some patience. When the final build of 3.0 drops sometime this summer you will be able to Jailbreak your iPhone 3G.

(The only way Apple could prevent a Jailbreak does not rest within the software, rather the hardware. As for Jailbreaking the next generation of iPhone, only time will tell, we are sure Apple will make it interesting…)

iPhone Dev Team Interview at Mobile Crunch

Before the release of the iPhone I used to use Symbian devices (mainly Nokia) and I would always be
looking for the next device, the next upgrade, the next vendor. These devices held my attention for a couple of months and I’d be spending my money on a new handset to get the next gadget high. This all changed with the iPhone, for my needs it is an almost perfect device, my eyes have not wandered at all.

Mobile Crunch has done an extensive interview with Pytey of the iPhone Dev Team, just hours before their much-anticipated iPhone 3G Unlock package is due to launch. It’s a very good read, with the topics covered including:

  • How the team work together at great distance and largely via IRC
  • Their relations with Apple
  • Thoughts on the App Store and Apple’s restrictions on apps / developers
  • Some insight on where the ‘yellowsn0w’ nickname for the upcoming 3G Unlock tool came from
  • Thoughts on Android

It’s also good to see that, as per the quote at the top of this post, the Dev Team still loves the device they spend so much time working with.

The interview is definitely worth a read – give it a look HERE

Reminder: iPhone 3G Unlock Due TODAY!

iPhone 2.0 Jailbreak and Unlock Pirate

Jeremy posted this earlier in the month and linked to the video, and he’ll be back again when the iPhone 3G Unlock goes live, but until then, we just wanted to remind everyone (who’s never updated their iPhone from OS 2.0!) that today is supposed to be the day!

Well it is now official, the Dev-Team has updated their blog today to let you all know when the iPhone 3G software unlock will be released. Seems as if New Years eve is what they are aiming for.

  • The target release date for the unlock is New Year’s Eve 2008.
  • This unlock method is available to iPhone 3Gs that have 2.11.07 baseband or earlier, we did warn you.
  • The unlock requires a jailbroken 3G iPhone.

Guess Times Square won’t be the only massive countdown going on today!

Dev Team Posts Tips For Using Yellowsn0w Unlock

The Dev Team has updated their blog again with some tips for those of you trying to use yellowsn0w to unlock your iPhone 3G. For starters, you’ll need to update to baseband 02.28.00, by updating through iTunes and using QwickPwn to activate, etc. They also write about a known problem with the hack involving SIM cards with the SIM Toolkit application menus. You can read more about it at their blog.

Just in time for the new year, the iPhone Dev Team have released yellowsn0w, their iPhone 3G Unlock package …

As rumored yesterday, the unlock works with the latest iPhone firmware and baseband (in fact, only with the latest, 2.2, firmware). The Dev Team’s announcement post for yellowsn0w provides the expected and usual warnings – mainly that this is beta software and you use it at your own risk.

The package is apparently very easy to use, and Gizmodo has a step-by-step breakdown on how to use it, HERE. MMi also has a good usage run-through, including a useful FAQ section, HERE.

Let the iPhone 3G Unlocking Begin! Dev Team Releases yellowsn0w Cydia Installer package

If you have been living under a rock for the past few months, you might not have heard all the talk about unlocking iPhone 3G. Well the time is officially here, the iPhone Dev Team has released the latest software unlock for iPhone 3G!!! It is only available on a Jailbroken iPhone 3G via the Cydia Installer and is to be used on the latest firmware with the newest baseband!

Dev Team update from their blog:

The unlock about to be released works exclusively with baseband 02.28.00. This baseband is provided by the latest firmware update (2.2) from Apple. You’ll need to upgrade to this release using iTunes and then use QuickPwn to activate etc. […] Because it works on 02.28.00, it is available to everyone on the planet. This means we don’t need to unnecessarily expose holes in earlier basebands, which is an important concern.

So who will be the first to give this a try? If you do, be sure to comment and let us know how it goes!

iPhone 3G Software Unlock Is Officially Released To Cydia

The iPhone Dev Team has officially released their 3G unlock, code-named yellowsn0w, to the Cydia app installer, which if not already available, should be available for download as soon as they get their repository in order. They also explained the message from earlier today. Interestingly, the unlock is not only able to unlock the latest firmware build, but requires it to work.

Jailbreak My iPhone? Why Should I?

I am being urged by fellow iPhone users to go ahead and take the next step with the iPhone and jailbreak the device, which from what I’ve been told is different from hacking. My fears are mostly the unknown and worries that I will ruin a perfectly good iPhone.  Also, I’m not really sure what all the benefits are since there’s so many cool iPhone apps available  in the iTunes store.  Below is a link that discusses the benefits of why to jailbreak your iPhone

If you have had any good or bad experience with jailbreaking, I would love to hear your opinion below.

Apple Staff Love Their Pwnage / Jailbreak Tools???

Lovely little tidbit from an iPhone Dev Team video presentation titled ‘How The iPhone Was Hacked’.

Just in case it’s not clear in the screencap above, the last point mentions that there are some 180 IP addresses from within the Apple corporate range that very actively update their Pwnage Tools.

Just keeping tabs on the opposition in the ongoing cat and mouse game, or are some of them in the ‘if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em’ club? :)

The video is an hour long, and apparently heavily technical – I haven’t watched all of it yet, but couldn’t resist sharing that little part of it. Check out the MMi link below if you’d like to see more of the video.
