Many people around the world are currently rating the newest applications for IPhone. The Iphone phenomenon is extending rapidly and you are able to find thousands of opinions, comments and rankings everywhere on the web. Now, if you already have your IPhone, the next thing to do is find the proper apps that suit your needs. Most people tend to choose all those apps related to video, music and photos, because IPhone holds all kinds of entertainment in one…still, if you want it to be a part of your working life or of your life as a student and want to be virtually present everywhere too, here is a list of applications that can make your day.

1. Air Sharing: Left the information at home? Never again. No need to take your laptop everywhere. With this free app for file storage, you can transfer or exchange your files via wi-fi and carry them with you all the time. Files are accessed from the same program (compatibility with a huge amount of formats). Compatible with Mac, Windows and Linux.

2. Wikipanion plus: How many times have you needed a definition, a date, biography and other specific information and there is no PC around? With this Wikipedia browsing application for IPhone your problem is solved. All the knowledge from the web into a hand-sized gadget. Direct connection with Wikipedia servers, so there is no no third-party servers fuss. Automatic search while you type and the last visited page opens from when you last left the application. It supports searching and browsing in more than 75 languages. Great app!

3. Tweeter: Scaled down version of the Twitter for IPhone. You can update your status remotely, view direct messages sent to you or view the public timeline. Very nice interface. Upload images and show the world what you’re doing instantly. Great for sending a picture when words don’t seem to help for descriptions.

4. Skype: All Skype functionalities in your IPhone. You can call and chat with all your skype contacts. No extra voice delays (it uses an AJAX interface). If your contact is not online, you can still call his mobile or landline. Good for saving some money.

5. Fieldrunners: While commuting, a very good way to kill time and help your eyesight as well (games which involve lots of eye movement help distinguish contrast, a capacity that people start to lose as they grow older). This Tower Defense game has free content updates. The idea is to defend and control the field using a big selection of upgradeable towers and lots of tactics against your enemies (thousands!). Try to dominate the fieldrunners and rise to the top as the Tower Defense Master. Very entertaining and probably the best game for IPhone so far.

Technology is advancing so fast that I am sure that when this little article is published there will some new apps already in the market, waiting for new users and their ratings. In the meantime, let’s enjoy the good ones that we have already discovered which are making our lives a little more pleasant everyday.

The title of this post may sound slightly exaggerated, however losing a job was literally what has happened to an employee of a Swiss insurance company.

The story is simple and sad at the same time. The woman said she could not work in front of a computer as she needed to lie in the dark. However, she was then seen to be surfing the Facebook. This statement was made by her employer Nationale Suisse. This fact has destroyed the company’s trust in the employee. As a result, the woman has been fired.

The fired woman says that she was indeed in bed and was surfing Facebook from her iPhone. Moreover, she accused her employer of spying on her and other employees by sending a mysterious friend request which allows access to personal online activity. Of course the company quickly rejected the accusations. According to the official information, employee’s Facebook activity had been stumbled across by a colleague in November, before use of the social network site was blocked in the company.

I must admit that Breakout remains one of my favorite games of all time. After all, Breakout was the first game that I’ve played on a computer back in 1980s. From a programmer’s perspective, Breakout is a sort of game (along with Columns of course) that every game programmer must develop. I’ve played all sorts and flavors of Break out from very traditional to very odd and sometimes bizarre versions.

There is no doubt that iPhone has given the second life to the arcade game genre. While iPhone is a device with enough power to handle sophisticated 3D shooters, arcade is something that perfectly fits the wonder device. Accelerometer doesn’t play the least role in this. It’s a real pleasure and more action to play accelerometer-enabled games.

The folks at Roundthird have developed a cool Breakout-style game for iPhone called Radial 50. This is probably the most peculiar and novel variation of this game. “Radial 50 expands on the arcade classic by allowing players to control the paddle and ball around a 360-degree environment. The objective is different from the classic, as you are focused on defeating the central target rather than the often painful chore of eliminating all targets”.

To admit I was sort of puzzled when I first heard about Radial 50. However, after watching the video I immediately admitted that Radial 50 would become one of the most addictive games for iPhone.

Apple is celebrating the billionth download from the App Store in a special way. Yes, there will be a prize valued at over $13,000 for one lucky customer. Namely, the prize consists of a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card, an iPod touch, a Time Capsule, and a MacBook Pro.

Downloading a new app via your computer, iPhone or iPod touch is what you need to to do to participate. If you don’t own an iPhone or iPod touch, you can still participate in the promotion by completely filling out an alternative form.

As you can see the App Store is a huge success. The following figures vividly illustrate this. As of today, over 5 million applications are downloaded from the App Store every day. This is up from a rate of 4.76 million applications per day in January and 2.2 million in December. Thus, it’s not a surprise that the half a billion milestone was reached on January 16th and after about three months we are talking about the the billionth download.

JavaScript performance has become a battleground for desktop-based browsers recently. It’s not surprise that Apple has taken care of this direction on iPhone as well. The reason is simple. With the advent of complex web applications, JavaScript performance has become a critical factor for a browser success.

Ars Technica has published results of a rather interesting research. According to the findings,early JavaScript benchmarks from iPhones running a beta of iPhone OS 3.0 suggest the new version will bring big speed gains to web apps running in Mobile Safari, even on existing iPhone hardware.

In a nutshell, we shall see a 3x speed improvement. It is even speculated that the browser on iPhone 3.0 will deliver a 16x speed boost over the existing version of Mobile Safari in iPhone OS 2.2.

Well, I think we have to wait and see the final results when the iPhone 3.0 becomes available.

I would like to thank everyone who posted comments on the previous post about Skype crashes. In particular I’d like to thank James who suggested updating Cydia mobile substrate. It looks that this update does fix the problem and I have not experienced Skype problems anymore.

So, if you do have a jailbroken iPhone make sure to apply the Cydia mobile substrate update. Just run the Cydia application and it will show this update in the changes section.

Skype was probably one of the most anticipated and much wanted applications for iPhone. While some of the all-in-one instant messengers like Nimbuzz do provide Skype connectivity, I always prefer an official application.

I installed Skype on my iPhone immediately it became available on the App Store. Unfortunately, the application crashes and shutsdown frequently. No, practically it’s useless. I’m not sure whether it is my iPhone to blame or there are some problems with the application. Anyhow, it’s really great to see Skype coming to iPhone and hopefully the developers will quickly fix whatever problems or bugs may be in the current release.

In the previous post I have briefly discussed why I use a jailbroken iPhone. iPhone software 3.0 narrows the reasons for jailbreaking. Even with the new features present in iPhone 3.0 there’s still one area for which I need a jailbroken iPhone and it is VoIP. Yes, there’s a cool SIP software called Siphon, which is available on jailbroken iPhones only. However, even this reason for jailbreaking may become unnecessary and this is why.

Yesterday I got an update of a popular messenger application Nimbuzz. Incidentally, a couple of minutes later I got an interesting e-mail from Numbuzz folks. It turns out that “it has taken quite a few rejections with Apple” but finally new Nimbuzz is available via the App Store.

New Nimbuzz sports not only a new and updated interface but a whole array of VoIP functionality. SkypeOut is there. Support for a popular VoIP provider SipGate is there too and a lot more. To be short, new Nimbuzz rocks.

Unfortunately, I’ve experienced some problems with SipGate. Namely, the dialing worked, but I could not get an incoming call. SkypeOut works fantastically well.

All in all, Nimbuzz is going to the right direction and in my opinion Nimbuzz is one of the best (if not the best) messengers available for iPhone. It must noted that the VoIP functionality works both on WiFi and 3G connections alike.

Have you ever asked yourself why people jailbreak iPhones? Well, I think that Apple has placed some artificial restrictions on iPhone. For example, we know that iPhone is inherently a multi-tasking capable device. Yet, we don’t get this feature. Jailbreak your iPhone and it will be come multi-tasking-enabled. A number of other areas can be mentioned where jailbreaking iPhone makes sense.

Recently, I’ve been asking myself a question why I have jailbroken iPhone. To admit, there are only a couple reasons. First, jailbreaking has given me much needed multitasking. Second, I use a VoIP application Siphon. Finally, there is one serious reason - tethering. I have switched to iPhone from Nokia E90 Communicator. I’m acustomed to using mobile phones as modems. So, why shall I not be able to use iPhone - a 3.5G device as a modem?

Unfortunately, even with iPhone 3.0 software, jailbreaking might remain the only way to fully use iPhones potential. So sad, so sad.

Today is a big day indeed. Although I believe we won’t get the full preview of iPhone 3.0, we will learn much about this important update. Is Apple adding some of the iPhone’s most heavily requested software features? Nobody knows for sure. There have been so many rumors about iPhone 3.0 recently that it has become really difficult to assume anything. Below are a couple of features that are believed to be present in iPhone 3.0. But again, these are only assumptions.

Cut/Copy and Paste - of course this is one of the missed functions. Especially, if you’ve switched to iPhone from Symbian or WinMo.

Push Notifications - This was promised by Apple so most likely we’ll see this one implemented.

Background Multitasking - Jailbroken iPhone owners do get multitasking via an application available on Cydia. However, it’s better to have multitasking which is supported by Apple.

MMS - I personally don’t use MMS but I know many people like this functionality.

It is also believed that a couple of other stuff will be present in iPhone 3.0 like tethering, compass, premium app store plus and a new app launcher.

Again, all of the above are just assumptions. We’ll have to wait and see what kind of a surprise Apple has prepared for us.
