Push notifications allow an app to notify the user of a new message or other important information via sounds, badges, or alert messages. These push notifications are most useful for messaging apps when timely response is necessary.

When I spotted a headline at Mac Daily News this morning mentioning NFL games live on the iPhone I thought ‘Oh yeah’. Then I read the details over at Silicon Alley Insider, and that feeling vanished real quick – because here’s how it’ll work if you want some live streamed gridiron action:

First, you’ll need to be a DirecTV satellite TV subscriber. Then you’ll need the $280 NFL Sunday Ticket subscription. And on top of that, you’ll need a $100 Sunday Ticket "SuperFan" subscription. But if you’re already leaning that way, then the iPhone app will be a great addition to your Sunday rituals.

If you’re already have a DirecTV subscription and have the NFL Sunday Ticket, I imagine this is pretty good news – but if you’re like me and you have neither, it just makes me happy that Major League Baseball offers a $9.99 option. I like following the NFL, but not enough to shell out those amounts – I’ll catch what NBC, CBS and the cable networks offer me.

It’s been a KRAPPy weekend for me. Not a crappy weekend by any means, but a weekend full of KRAPPS. KRAPPS is an iPhone site that I’ve been following for a while. They offer a scathing, humorous take on a lot of the real dross apps that make it into the App Store – the crap apps we’re all so familiar with - as well as the occasional look at a non-crap app. They’re also the guys who first broke the horrible Baby Shaker app story a few weeks back.

Friday night I got chatting with Alex, who runs their site – and found we have some things in common and some similar views on several iPhone-related topics – and that he’s just a nice guy as well.

Also this weekend, Alex and KRAPPS are featured in a Wall Street Journal video – an episode of the ‘Tech: Jordan’s Diary’ series. The video talks about the success and proliferation of crap apps – and features some examples.

You can check out The WSJ’s look at the world of crap-apps HERE …

Digits is a new iPhone app that does one very simple thing, and does it very well. It makes it quick and easy to take down a person’s (or place’s) phone number and get it added to the Contacts app.

Sure, there are plenty of existing ways to jot down a number on the iPhone, and of course you can always just use the Contacts app itself to add a new contact and record their number – but none of the existing methods are as easy as Digits …

I’m not normally a fan of shoot ‘em up / action games, but the trailer for the upcoming Terminator Salvation app for iPhone looks hugely impressive.

The graphics and action look super slick to me – and to the guys at BGR, who are much better judges:

Jibing with reports from early testers, the game looks smooth, complex and most definitely action-packed. Gameloft definitely looks to be upping the ante with this one.

This is one action game I feel very tempted to try out.

Check out the trailer video at BGR’s post HERE – and let us know what you think …

As those of you who have read this blog for any length of time will already know, I’m a big sports fan, and a big fan of iPhone sports games as well. Basketball has been a particular favorite – to play and watch – since I was very young.

I like following NCAA and NBA basketball – and the 3-Point Shootout during the NBA’s annual All Star Weekend is always one of my favorite things to watch (along with the Slam Dunk contest of course). So the 3-Point Skills Challenge app for the iPhone is just the sort of challenge I’m looking for.

I’m a big fan of Twitter and an even bigger fan of iPhone Twitter apps. I’ve just been watching a preview of a major new update to Twitterrific – one of the first and best-know iPhone Twitter clients – and I feel very excited about this major update.

The video preview of Twitterrific 2.0 was just hugely impressive to me. Here are some of the excellent new features that caught my eye:

Supports multiple accounts

3 themes built in, including a lighter one

Add Personal Notes on individual users’ profiles

Mini mode – doesn’t show avatars etc – but fits the most tweets possible in a single view

Compress text – shorten words down – not just URLs, but regular words – to squeeze more into a tweet

Easy to add multiple usernames to @ replies – you see both the timeline and the post new tweet field at once

I’ve worked in tech support and network management for many years, and as an IT consultant for the last five – so an app of this sort is interesting to me. I’m always glad to see iPhone apps that can potentially make tech jobs easier.

iLauncher is a new iPhone app that lets you control USB missile launchers over WiFi – offering huge potential for unmanned, stealth attacks on unsuspecting office colleagues. With this app in your arsenal, you should be able to leave your desk unattended – and innocent looking – while you skulk around the corner and set the foam missiles to launch.

In order to use the app, you’ll need to have the USB Missile Launcher – presumably a particular model from Newo Corp (makers of the app and some of these USB launchers). You’ll also need the iPhone to be on the same WiFi network as the PC with the missile launcher attached, and download some free control software for them as well.

This app looks like a lot of fun. I may take a look at prices for some of those missiles soon – keep my office companion (my Labrador) on his toes.

iLauncher is in the App Store now, priced at $2.99.
