App Update: ToDo 2.0

download Appigo’s ToDo was updated a couple of days ago and I think it’s good enough to switch back to. I’ve been using Remember the Milk (RTM) because I thought it was faster and I was all caught up in the coolness of having landscape support. But here’s the thing: how often do I really need landscape task support?

I’ll throw up the change list here and talk about why I’m moving back after the jump.

iPhone OS Beta 4 – Arrived Almost Right on Time

StoreSettings

iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 4 arrived just a little later than expected tonight – but it’s still good to see it, and nice to see that the pattern of a new beta release every two weeks is continuing.

I’ve only had the new beta installed for a short while, and so far have only noticed a few new things and changes.  For now, I’m going to be optimistic and hope there is some good bug squashing under the hood of this one – if it could stamp out the disappearing Call button and intermittent battery drain issues that would be very nice.

Recommended: Baseball Slugger Preview at The APPera

baseballslugger_screen1

The APPera site has got a very nice preview post up on an upcoming new baseball app called Baseball Slugger.

This one looks like a flat-out Home Run Derby type affair, which looks and sounds awfully good to me.

It offers several game modes, from training and solo efforts to mano-a-mano contests and online matchups.  The game play and effects look pretty good to me.  There’s no word on when this one is due out, but I’m looking forward to seeing it.

Check out The APPera’s post HERE for more details, screencaps, and a good demo video …

Hilarious Headlines: Microsoft, Verizon In Talks to Launch iPhone Rival

OK, it’s not really fair of me to laugh at this one – as it’s a (paid for) subscriber only article at the Wall Street Journal, so I only read the headline – but I can’t help it.  This one just screams comedy to me.

Verizon are the guys who spurned Apple and the iPhone a few years ago, allowing AT&T to jump in and grab that exclusive deal in the US – in what must go down as not one of the smartest moves ever by a carrier.

And Microsoft are the guys who have had an ‘iPhone rival’ mobile platform for around 10 years now – which has been decimated in under two years by the iPhone.  Also the guys who brought us the Zune as an ‘iPod rival’ – think we know how that’s working out.

This headline sounds a little like ‘The 3 Stooges In Talks To Outsmart Einstein’ to me – cannot help laughing.

Stanza

It was announced yesterday that Amazon has bought Lexcycle, who make the Stanza ebook reader app for the iPhone.

Apple Insider reckons the purchase was made ‘in a bid to extend its reach of the digital book market beyon its Kindle device’.

Lexcycle says the deal shouldn’t affect users of Stanza:

"We are not planning any changes in the Stanza application or user experience as a result of the acquisition," the company said in a blog post. "Customers will still be able to browse, buy, and read ebooks from our many content partners."

GV Mobile for iPhone – Launched & Given Rave Review at WOIP

GVMobile

GV Mobile – the native iPhone app for working with the new Google Voice (formerly Grand Central) service – has recently launched in the App Store, and has already got a rave review from my friend Dan over at What’s On iPhone.

Dan offers a very good and concise description of what Google Voice is and does …

Google Voice is a rebadged and enhanced GrandCentral. Google Voice is not a voice service as much as it is a voice-management service. It helps organize and enhance the phones numbers and services you already use. Google Voice gives you a single number that people can call. That number, in turn, can ring any number of different phone numbers. Then, if you do not pick up, it gives you one inbox for voicemail (and sms). In addition, Google Voice offers free voicemail transcription.

Phonesharepiechart

I always enjoy Michael Mace’s thoughtful and insightful posts at his Mobile Opportunity site.  Today, he focused on a recent study his company, Rubicon Consulting, has done about and amongst US smartphone users.

Some of the facts and findings are very striking to me, such as:

Only 10-11 % of adults in the US own smartphones.  That’s a smaller percentage than I would have guessed.  I think this number will grow a lot in the next 5 years – and to me that means all these players in this space still have it all to play for.

Between them, RIM (Blackberry) and iPhone account for 75% of those smartphone users in the US.  That’s a huge chunk.  Seems like, even with all that remaining near 90% to play for, all the rest need to step up their games big-time – and soon.

And maybe the most surprising to me …

Review: iPub for iPhone

iPub for iPhone

I like pubs.  A lot.  I’m also a fan of Irish pubs – having lived in the UK for a number of years, and having lived in a few areas where there were some good, genuine ones.

So the iPub app for the iPhone – which promises to guide me to the nearest Irish pub anywhere in the world and help me find ‘The Craic’ (good times) – was of immediate interest for me.

pandmscoble

As some of you may already know, I’ve been a contributing writer on iPhone Life magazine since its debut issue.  Recently, I’ve also signed on to be a regular online blogger with iPhone Life.  I’ll cover some similar topics to those I cover here, but try not to overlap them too much.

Today I’ve posted the first in a series of posts called ‘A Day in The iPhone Life of …’ over there.  I’m delighted to say that my first partner for one of these posts is Patrick Scoble (pictured above with his younger brother Milan) – the eldest son of Robert Scoble, the world’s best-known tech blogger.  Patrick and his dad are both iPhone users, and Patrick is very much the Scoble family iPhone expert.

It was big fun doing this with Patrick, and I hope some of you will get a chance to check it out.  You can find the post HERE – and you can subscribe to my blog feed at iPhone Life here.
